Subject: Response: The Difficult Transition from Military to Civilian Life (PEW Research)

Received from a long-time retired Air Force friend in response to the Pew Research Center article posted on Friday afternoon.

Hi Paul,

When I retired, after 22 years of service in the USAF (1992), I was one of those who had a difficult time transitioning into a civilian world.  I have found that, unlike the brotherhood and sense of being part of something bigger than the individual Soldier, Sailor, Airman, or Marine, civilians have no honor, no sense of pride in what they do, and no trust in the guy next to you.  In the military, you could always count on someone "having your back", whether in a stinking foxhole in the mud, or fighting the fire aboard the USS Forrestal, that other guy, team mate, or crewmember was there for you, even if he didn't know your name.  From the chow line to the FEBA, he was always there for you.  In civilian life, it is every man (or woman) for himself, and the orders of the day are CYA.  It is always "work for the bottom line" not for the good of the unit or team.

During my "second career" I had the pleasure of working with veterans and retired Marines, Coasties, Soldiers, Sailors, and other Airmen.  To a man, they were having the same disgusting results in the "civilian world" I was, no leadership willing to lead.  We veterans banded together and always got the job done faster and efficiently, in most cases it was not done the way our "civilian management" wanted.  So that means I was always in trouble with "management".

That is the real crux of the problem, in the "civilian world" it is called "management", in the military we called it "leadership".  Of course, today the civilian world is infecting the military world as we no longer have commanders willing to "lead from the front".

I believe it is also why we veterans are having a difficult problem with our claims from the VA.  They are civilians who look only at the bottom line.  They almost never look at the veteran as a person.

Okay, I'll get off my soap box now,
Your brother,

Ed
